Natural history illustration.

There is a difference between drawing an acorn and drawing Quercus robur. Generic nature art decorates a page; a true natural history plate teaches from it — because the species is real, and every diagnostic detail can be checked against a field guide.

Can you tell three oaks apart?

Most illustrated acorns are nobody's acorn — a brown oval in a cup. This plate paints three real species, and the differences are the picture.

Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) hangs its acorns in pairs on a long stalk, beside a nearly stalkless leaf with two little earlobes at its base. Sessile oak (Q. petraea) is the exact mirror: stalkless acorns tight against the twig, but a long-stalked leaf with no earlobes. And northern red oak (Q. rubra) wears a shallow, beret-like cup and bristle-tipped lobes in autumn russet.

Cup depth and stalk length are the diagnostics a botanist would check. A child won't name them — but a child's book that gets them right teaches quietly on every page.

The mushroom everyone draws — and almost no one draws right.

The fly agaric is the storybook toadstool, so it is usually drawn from memory: red cap, white dots, done. The real fungus is more interesting.

The white flecks are wart patches — remnants of the veil that wrapped the young mushroom, still visible here on the button-stage specimen beside it. Below the cap: a hanging skirt-like ring, and a swollen base with concentric shaggy rings. The gills just show at the rim. A birch leaf sits at its foot, because that is the tree this species grows beneath.

Every one of those details is checkable in a field guide. That is the standard a natural history plate should meet, even in a picture book — especially in a picture book.

A butterfly and the plant it cannot live without.

The European peacock carries four iridescent eyespots in their true colours — blue-violet ringed with cream and black — over rusty crimson wings with barred, cream-flecked edges. Clubbed antennae, furry brown body: all field marks, all present.

Beneath it grows stinging nettle. Not decoration — biology. Nettle is the peacock's caterpillar food plant; without it there is no butterfly. Pairing a species with its food plant is how good natural history illustration teaches twice with one picture.

That ecological honesty is what separates an educational plate from a pretty butterfly.

Why bother, in a book for children?

Because children look harder than adults do. A five-year-old will hold the page next to the real acorn from the park — and the book either agrees with the world or it doesn't. Books that agree get trusted, re-read, and kept.
