Documentary pitch deck design funding a film that does not exist yet..

A documentary deck sells something nobody can watch yet. Commissioners fund access, character and a director who can clearly see the film — usually in that order.

N° 01What commissioners fund

Access and character before subject.

01

Access you actually have

The most valuable line in a documentary deck is proof you can get into rooms others cannot. Signed participation, exclusive archive, an ongoing relationship with the subject — stated plainly, not implied.

02

A character, not a topic

Funders back people the audience will follow. A film about an issue is harder to finance than a film about a person inside that issue, however important the issue is.

03

Evidence you can shoot it

A sizzle, a scene, or previous work in the same register. Commissioners are underwriting your ability to execute, and prior footage answers that faster than any treatment paragraph.

N° 02The deck

Treatment, budget, comparables.

01

A visual treatment that sets the register

Stills, references and a stated visual approach — observational, archive-led, hybrid. This tells a commissioner what the film feels like, which is the thing the logline cannot carry.

02

An honest budget and finance plan

Total, what is attached, and what this conversation is for. Vague asks stall; a clear gap with named partial funding moves.

03

Comparable titles with real outcomes

Films of similar scale and where they landed. Comparables are how a commissioner sizes the audience, and unrealistic ones cost you credibility immediately.

Questions

The answers we give most often.

What goes in a documentary pitch deck?
Logline, character, access, visual treatment, director's statement, budget and finance plan, comparable titles, and team.
How long should it be?
Twelve to twenty pages. Documentary decks are more visual than corporate decks and can carry more image per page.
Do I need a trailer or sizzle?
It helps enormously. Even a rough scene answers the execution question better than any amount of written treatment.
What matters most to commissioners?
Access and character. A well-written film about a subject anyone could cover is harder to fund than a rough one with exclusive access.
Should I include the budget?
Yes, with what is already attached and what this conversation is for. A vague ask stalls decisions.
How do I choose comparable titles?
Similar scale and audience, with real outcomes. Comparing a first feature to a landmark festival winner damages credibility.
