N° 20 — Alphabet books

A studio service

Alphabet book illustration..

The alphabet book is one of the oldest picture book forms — and still one of the most effective. Twenty-six opportunities to illustrate, twenty-six windows into a visual world. The best ABC books aren't just teaching tools; they're miniature exhibitions.

A for Art. Z for always.

N° 01What makes an alphabet book work

Not just A for apple.

A weak alphabet book follows the same tired path: A for apple, B for ball, C for cat. Readable, learnable, instantly forgettable. A strong alphabet book chooses a world and runs the alphabet through it. A is for anchor (in the ocean book). A is for avocado (in the food book). A is for attention (in the book about feelings).

This small decision — the world the alphabet lives in — changes everything. It turns a rote learning exercise into a book children ask for repeatedly. Themed alphabets are reread for pleasure, not only used for learning.

01

Classic ABC

Twenty-six objects or concepts, one per letter. Strong when every entry feels considered rather than generic.

02

Themed alphabet

All letters live in one world — ocean, farm, city, kitchen. Coherence turns it into a book-book, not a teaching aid.

03

Personalized alphabet

Your child's name threaded through the letters, or every letter linked to something from your child's world.

04

Vocabulary alphabet

For older preschoolers — richer words, A for astonish, G for gloomy, S for scarcely.

05

Bilingual alphabet

Letter in one language, object in another — or two entries per letter across two languages.

06

Regional alphabet

A city's alphabet, a country's alphabet, a family's alphabet. Hyperlocal and memorable.

N° 03Questions

The answers we give most often.

Can the book be bilingual?
Yes — bilingual alphabet books are one of our specialities. Possible configurations: English letters with German objects, or dual entries per letter. We can handle English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, Turkish.
How do you choose what represents each letter?
If themed, the world dictates it (ocean → A is for anemone). If personalized, we interview the family — the child's favorite objects, family members, places. The best alphabet books feel inevitable by the end, as if these 26 choices were the only possible ones.
Can it be more than one object per letter?
Yes. Some of our favorite alphabet books have three or four objects per letter, creating small scenes. This works especially well in themed alphabets (the kitchen alphabet: A for apron, apple, artichoke, avocado).
Is this appropriate for toddlers?
Alphabet recognition begins around age 3 and matures through age 6. A rich alphabet book works for all these ages simultaneously — young children look, older ones read the letters themselves.
