N° 21 — Animal books

A studio service

Animal book illustration..

Animals populate more than half of all children's books. Not by accident — children identify with animals faster than with humans, project their own feelings freely, and love the recognition from their everyday world.

Every animal has its own story.

N° 01Why animals work

The oldest children's book theme.

From Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit through The Very Hungry Caterpillar to The Gruffalo — the most formative children's books of the last century have had animal protagonists. The reason is developmental: animals let the child-reader identify with a character without inheriting specific human traits like race, gender, or age. A rabbit can be any child.

At the same time, the subject isn't trivial. A good animal book shows the animal with respect for its actual nature — a rabbit behaves like a rabbit, not like a human in a rabbit costume. The best animal illustrators have watched the animal, not only imagined it.

01

Farm animals

Many children's first animal book — cow, pig, chicken, sheep. Clear shapes, clear sounds, clear images.

02

Pets

Dog, cat, rabbit, hamster. Often as personalized books with the family's own pet as the main character.

03

Forest animals

Fox, deer, squirrel, bear. The forest world suits deeper stories about seasons and community.

04

Wildlife around the world

Elephant, lion, giraffe, whale. For children interested in the wider world — as nonfiction or as fantasy.

05

Insects and tiny creatures

Caterpillar, bee, beetle, ant. The small made large. A great entry point for nature observation.

06

Dinosaurs

A universe of their own, with their own page — but so are saber-tooths, mammoths, and early prehistoric worlds.

N° 03Questions

The answers we give most often.

Can you illustrate a specific pet?
Yes. Send us 3 to 5 good photos of your pet from different angles — front, side, full body. From that we build a character sheet that stays consistent across every page. Works for dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, reptiles, almost anything.
Naturalistic or stylized?
Either. Naturalistic works well for nonfiction or older children. Stylized (more cartoon-like) suits younger children better and often works for personalized gift books. We advise based on the target age group.
Multiple animals in the same book?
Absolutely — often. A farm book typically has 6 to 10 different animals; a seek-and-find has 20 or more. Each gets its own character.
Can we illustrate a real-life favorite animal of my child?
Yes, gladly. Many commissions come from the children's room — the stuffed animal, the friend at the zoo, the favorite pet. We bring these figures into the book, often alongside the child themselves.
