Page count

The single biggest driver. A 12-page board book and a 32-page picture book are very different amounts of art. Count the spreads that need illustration, not the words.

Style complexity

A loose ink-and-wash line drawing takes far less time than a detailed painterly spread with rendered light and texture. Simpler styles cost less — and often suit young children better.

Characters & consistency

One recurring character is straightforward; a cast of five who must stay on-model across every page is real work. More characters, more cost.

Personalisation

Turning real children (from photos) into the main characters — matching hair, skin, and features across the book — is bespoke work and priced above a generic character.

Revisions & deliverables
