A single subject on a plain ground. At this age a busy spread reads as noise — the eye has nowhere to land.

One-year-olds look at faces longer than anything else. Books full of expressions hold attention that plot cannot.

The same phrase on every spread. They are learning the shape of language before the meaning of it.

Thick pages survive being turned by a fist. Paper pages turn a book into something you have to supervise.

- How many words should a book for a 1 year old have?
- Very few — often under 40 across the whole book, and frequently the same phrase repeated with one word changed. The adult's voice carries the book; the text is a script for that voice.
- Do 1 year olds understand a story?
- Not a plot, no. They understand rhythm, repetition, naming and turn-taking. A book at this age is a shared activity more than a narrative.
- Can a personalised book work this young?
- Yes, and it works differently than later: seeing their own name and face repeated is exactly the repetition this age responds to. We keep the text minimal and the pictures large.
