Fewer pictures, placed deliberately — to break up text, land a joke, or show a thing words would labour over.

Friendship falling out, being blamed unfairly, wanting to be good at something and not being. Real, small, survivable.

A character with a flaw
By seven, a protagonist who is simply nice is boring. The flaw is what makes the ending mean something.

- When do children move to chapter books?
- Usually somewhere between six and eight, and rarely cleanly — most children move back and forth between chapter books and picture books for years. Both are reading.
- Do 7 year olds still want illustrations?
- Very much. Illustrated fiction is the dominant format at this age; the pictures are just sparser and doing different work.
- Can a personalised book work for an 8 year old?
- Yes, if it is a real story rather than a name inserted into a template. At this age the child will notice immediately if the book is not actually about them.
