A studio service
Children's books for 5 year olds.
Five is a split age. The same child wants a picture book at bedtime and to sound out words on their own in the morning. The books that work carry both — a story worth hearing, and text they can begin to recognise.
Two kinds of reading at once.

N° 01What works at this age
What a book for a 5 year old needs.
01
Text they can meet halfway
Familiar words and repeated phrases let a five-year-old join in on the parts they know, without the book becoming a lesson.
02
A story that still rewards being read to
Early-reader vocabulary should not flatten the story. The best books at five are still worth an adult's voice.
03
Chapters, gently
Natural breaks let a longer story be read across two nights, which is how five-year-olds start to hold a narrative over time.
04
Detail worth returning to
Fives re-read. Pictures with something new to notice on the third pass are doing real work.
N° 02Questions
The answers we give most often.
- Should a 5 year old be reading on their own?
- Some are decoding simple words, many are not, and both are normal. The useful thing at five is that being read to and reading yourself are still the same pleasure.
- Are picture books still right at five?
- Yes. Picture books carry more sophisticated ideas than early readers do — dropping them too early trades story quality for decoding practice.
- What makes a personalised book work at five?
- At five the child wants to be the one who does something, not just the one who appears. We build the story so their character makes the decision that resolves it.
