High-Key Pastel Wash

High-key means the whole picture lives at the light end of the scale: very pale, heavily diluted washes, low saturation, and — most importantly — large areas of paper left entirely untouched. The white space is not emptiness; it is air. The eye rests there, and everything that is painted gains weight precisely because so much is not.

This restraint has a practical gift for the youngest readers: nothing on the page shouts. A high-key book is calm to hold and calm to read, which is why the style suits baby and toddler books, first-experience stories and any book meant to lower the temperature of the end of a day.
