The look, explained.

Gouache is watercolour with the transparency turned off — an opaque, velvety paint that dries perfectly matte and lets an illustrator build a page out of flat, confident shapes. There is little blending and no fuss; a lamp is a warm yellow shape, the night is a deep blue one, and the picture gets its power from how those shapes sit next to each other.

This is the language of the mid-century golden age of picture books and of the best modern poster design. The limited palette forces every colour to earn its place, which is why gouache pages look so intentional — and why they reproduce so reliably in print, with none of the muddiness that can creep into over-worked paintings.

Choose it for bold, rhythmic stories: counting books, concept books, funny read-alouds with a strong beat. It also makes arresting covers — a gouache cover reads clearly even at Amazon-thumbnail size, which matters more than most authors expect.

The sample above is our control scene — the same bedtime moment we paint in all nine watercolor styles, so you can compare the styles side by side rather than guessing from unrelated pictures.
