N° 22 — Bedtime
A studio service
Bedtime story book illustration..
The bedtime book has a job no other book has. It has to slow the reader down. It has to settle the child. It has to feel like an ending. The best bedtime books — from Goodnight Moon to Peace at Last — achieve this with craft that looks effortless and isn't.
The book that ends the day.

N° 01What makes a bedtime book
Gentle, rhythmic, predictable.
Bedtime books follow a different rhythm than daytime books. The pace slows. Scenes get quieter. Colors deepen. Many bedtime books use repetition — a phrase that returns, a motion that cycles — because repetition is itself soothing.
There's a craft in making a book feel like an ending. The last spread has weight. The closing word matters. A strong bedtime book leaves the child not excited but settled, ready to close the cover and close their eyes.

N° 03Questions
The answers we give most often.
- What makes a bedtime book different from other picture books?
- Three things: pacing (slower), palette (warmer, often darker toward the end), and ending (settled rather than resolved). A bedtime book can have the same basic structure as a daytime book, but the treatment is different.
- Should it rhyme?
- Often yes. Rhyme and meter create the rocking rhythm that many bedtime books are known for. But not always — prose bedtime books can work beautifully too, especially for slightly older children.
- Can we include the child's specific bedtime routine?
- Yes, and this is often what makes personalized bedtime books work. The book mirrors the routine — bath, pajamas, teeth, story, lights out — and becomes part of it. The child sees themselves in the book while doing the same things in real life.
- What age group is this for?
- Bedtime books span from about 1 year (board book versions) through 7 or 8 years (longer illustrated bedtime stories). We advise on length and complexity based on the child's age.
