N° 18 — Early readers

A studio service

Early reader book illustration..

The child becomes the reader. At six, they move from being read to toward reading themselves — slowly at first, then with growing fluency. The book must follow this arc. Too much text intimidates; too little bores. Illustration stays important but gradually recedes.

The book the child reads alone.

N° 01The transition out of picture books

Less picture, more text.

At six, children begin reading themselves — first letter by letter, then with increasing fluency. The book has to support this. Illustration stays important but gradually steps back into a supporting role.

This is the most sensitive age group for reading development. A child who experiences reading as frustrating now often reads less later. A child who develops reading pleasure here typically reads for life.

01

Early reader books

Large type, short sentences, simple vocabulary, many illustrations. Three to five sentences per page.

02

Extended early readers

Short chapters (5–10 pages), slightly more text per page, illustrations on every spread.

03

First chapter books

Chapters of 10–15 pages, illustrations every few pages, book readable in multiple sittings.

04

Illustrated middle-grade

For children reading fluently who want longer stories. Fewer illustrations, more text — still visibly a children's book.

05

Book series

Many children in this age group develop preferences for series. Recurring characters, familiar world, new adventures.

06

Individual pace

Some six-year-olds already read 100-page books; some eight-year-olds still need being read to. The age label is a guide, not more.

N° 03Questions

The answers we give most often.

What's the difference between early reader and chapter book?
An early reader is typically 32–64 pages, large type, very short chapters (or none), and many illustrations. A chapter book is 64–128 pages, with clear chapters of 10–15 pages each, and assumes some reading stamina.
Do you illustrate existing manuscripts?
Yes — this is one of our most common projects. Send us your manuscript, we propose a fitting style, design covers and characters, then illustrate the full book. Price scales with page count and illustration density.
Can you build series?
Absolutely. The first book in a series is always the larger investment — that's where characters, world, and style are created. Subsequent books use that foundation and run 30–40% cheaper than the first. Ask about series pricing.
Do children this age still need illustrations?
Yes, almost always. Illustrations at this age have a new purpose: they pace the reading, give the eye rest, anchor the imagination. Pure text books are only appropriate from about age 9–10, and even then covers and occasional interiors are standard.
